When Dinosaur Look-Alikes Ruled the Earth

Check out Prideland on PBS Voices: to.pbs.org/3hep3fo
There were a huge number of croc-like animals that flourished during the Triassic Period. Dinosaurs had just arrived on the scene but it was these animals that truly ruled the Earth, becoming both abundant and diverse.

For many hundreds of millions of years, reptiles and arthropods have adapted to a wide variety of lifestyles or niches, but they seem to lack the ability to excel or dominate in any single type of a habitat. They are like the Jack of all trades, master of none.

I'm sorry but it appears that the British isles were always a part of Europe throughout all the maps you're showing. As much as I know it has departed from Africa, please can you shed more light on the subject in a comment or even make a dream come true and do a video about it, I love this channel but this slight detail really bothers me. Thanks in advance!

Use this fact for the ignorant and Unenlightened** . Within the conversation of evolution, I commonly hear people bring up this ignorant idea that crocodilians and sharks have not changed in hundreds of millions of years. Incorrect. I need not speak about crocodilians, but, with sharks the ray family directly evolved from them; Sting Rays, Manta Rays, Bat Rays, Eagle Rays, etc. Crocodilians and sharks have given rise to countless other lifeforms through evolution, but, a proto-form of both is so effective and successful that it lasts to this very day.

Or maybe rauisuchians sex were determined by temperature, so one of the gender become much more common while the other becomer rarer, so the population shrunk, crashing the gene pool?

I don’t understand the fact that a reptile would be the beginning and the early creature in every animal / species in this world , birds . Mammals , ! Aren’t these animals different from reptiles ? How they transitioned from reptiles to a different animal that give birth instead of laying and doesn’t need the environment temperature like a reptile would unlike a mammal who’s warm blooded and didn’t rely on the environmental much . It’s a bit confusing

The survival of the dinosaurs over the rausuchians may not be because of any superiority at all in their physiology. Instead the rausuchians very success may have been their downfall. As the dominant animals they occupied most of the specialist and large-bodied animal ecological niches, while the dinosaurs were confined to being small, generalist scuttlers hiding in the undergrowth around their mighty feet. But specialization and large-size are recipes for disaster when catastrophe strikes, it is the small generalists who survive. With their big predecessors gone the small species of animals flourished and diversified, gradually re-evolving many of the traits of the larger species. Then another catastrophe struck and the now-large dinosaurs went the way of the rausuchians, with the Earth inherited by smaller animals like birds and mammals. What goes around comes around. Meanwhile the crocodiles in their swampy domains were insulated it seems from all these disasters and just carried on with their archaic ways.

Well this might play into the hot vs cold blooded argument a bit. It may also play into the protofeathers argument on how early did dino's become fluffy? I could expect that the breakup of the super continent caused a small ice age or at least the temp to drop enough that large cold blooded animals like crocs would mostly die out leaving plenty of niches open for fluffy little dinos and small mammals to survive. The remaining surviving croc species must have been the ones decedent from those closest to the equator at the time.

“All good things must come to an end” Me sitting here: .... so uh when is it gonna be our turn? 😆. People always talk about the WORLD ending.. but I think we’d just cause our own extinction before the entire world becomes lifeless. The big advantage we have is our minds though. If our bodies begin to face an evolutionary challenge like idk intense global warming.. we can create technology to handle it instead of relying on a bodily adaptation.
